New Fuel Efficient, "Gas-Sipping" RVs

When it comes to increasing gas mileage, motor home manufacturers continue to improve with new and innovative ideas. These ideas and new features have attracted buyers, both new to the lifestyle and those trading up. But, unlike the auto industry, no one quoted expected fuel mileage, or in many cases, cared, for that matter. That thought process has changed recently due to over-inflated fuel prices. There aren't many RV buyers that don't have "How many miles per gallon" at the forefront of their mind.

So what are RV manufacturers doing to increase fuel economy?

Decrease in Motorhome Weight

Reducing the RV's overall weight has obvious benefits. This is accomplished by the use of lighter materials and new technology in structural design techniques. Both external and internal techniques have been developed to decrease the overall weight of the RV. Where possible, aircraft aluminum is used for exterior structure, which provides light weight but strong exterior support to the RV. Inside, honeycomb fillers are being used in place of solid wood and surfaces. The honeycomb structure still provides excellent strength while still reducing material weight by up to 80%.

Choosing smaller alternatives recreational vehicles, such as truck campers, pop-up campers and other light weight, gas saving RVs also provides an excellent way to enjoy the road, with fuel costs starting at only one extra gallon of gas per 100 miles traveled.

Improved Aerodynamics

Improvements in aerodynamics takes both shape and external materials used into account. Overall vehicle profile design changes that reduce drag coefficients that exist most older-model motor coaches. Streamiling the profile, combined with space-age 'slippery' external materials provide much-improved aerodynamics which results in improved gas mileage.

Diesel vs. Gasoline Motorhomes

Although diesel prices are higher than regular gasoline, diesel motor home coaches get up to twice the gas mileage. So you may want to consider a quality diesel motor home as your recreational vehicle choice. Please visit our Class A Diesel Motorhome Portal for more information.

Improvements in Drive Train Technology

More efficient transmissions are some of the newest ways in which RV manufacturers are increasing RV gas mileage. Some of the newest 'hybrid' technology uses electric drives with two motors, one for each drive wheel. Although it may appear that two electric motors would increase the weight, they actually replace the differential housings for a 'wash'. In some cases, it actually results in a decrease in overall RV weight.
